my stitch fix review
note: this month my fix was complimentary. this post also contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.
If you watched my Instagram story recently, you saw that I received my first Stitch Fix box. I had never done a subscription with them before, or in fact, any other clothing subscription so I was very excited to try it out. I know a lot of people have shown interest so I I thought I’d write more in depth about my experience.
When you sign up with Stitch Fix you first create a style profile with all the relevant information about yourself. This is a five step process where you give them as much information about you as you want. Note that a lot of the information is optional, but the more you give the better chance you have a getting a box of pieces you are happy with!
The first section is “size” which includes things like height and weight, typical sizing, and your proportions. Next is “fit/cut” where you tell them how you like your clothes to fit and which parts of your body you are comfortable showing. They make it very easy with multiple choice answers — sometimes these things can be hard to put into words so that definitely helps!
Third section is called “style” and this is where you select which styles you prefer. This is definitely the most in-depth section and it’s totally worth taking your time on it. First they give you 12 suggested looks and you rate how much you like each one. Then they ask you how often you dress for certain occasions and how much of each box you want to focus on those occasions. Then, you can tell them which brands you like to shop, as well as how often you’d like to receive different types of clothing (i.e. tops, dresses, accessories, etc). You also select how adventurous you want to be — so if you are wanting to try new things but don’t know where to start, this can be perfect for you. Lastly, for this section, they ask you what to avoid — colors, prints, fabrics — so if you can’t stand the color orange, then you better check off that box!
Section four is “price” so you let them know how much you like to spend on different categories. Whether it’s the cheaper, the better, or $200+ it’s best to be honest about how much you would spend on an item because that’s the price points they are going to try to send you. The last section is a just little more personal information about you. Your birthday, occupation and primary objectives for signing up with Stitch Fix are a few examples. One piece of information that they ask, and somehow I didn’t fill out, is your social handles. If you have public profiles on Instagram and/or Pinterest, your stylist can view them and get a better sense of who you are. Definitely should have included those on mine!
Any final thoughts? Make sure to include any information you think they need to know but didn’t get a chance to share in the previous sections. Their examples — “My workplace is pretty casual. I can wear jeans but I would like to dress it up with cute tops! Also, please stick to warm tones - I look best in burgundy, plum and mustard. I prefer v-neck blouses and subtle prints.”
So, now that you’ve signed up and completed the style profile, you schedule your first fix! The frequency choices are every 2-3 weeks, every month, every other month and every 3 months. I started with every month and received my first box about 3 weeks later. Note that there is a $20 styling fee per box, however, if you keep anything from it, that fee gets applied toward your final order. So if you decide to keep a $60 sweater, you’ll only be charged $40 at checkout because you already paid the $20. Make sense? Excellent. On to the good stuff.
When I opened my box, I had four pieces of clothing wrapped in tissue on top, then their envelope of information and pre-addressed return pouch, followed by a purse laying at the bottom. Overall it was nicely packaged and I like their presentation. Nothing too fancy but definitely not just thrown in there. In the envelope there was a card explaining how the process works with step by step directions, an invoice which listed everything that was in the box along with their prices and a style sheet that gave you suggested looks for each item in your box. One perk about these boxes is that if you keep everything, they give you a 25% discount on your total — another reason to be super thorough on your style profile.
My box included a Liverpool chambray shirt for $68, a Michael Stars knit top for $108, a Coffeeshop hooded vest for $68, Madewell raw hem skinny jeans for $128 and a Moda Luxe satchel for $68. These were all relatively within the price points that I selected in my profile, so I was pleased with that.
I tried on each piece to see how they fit and again, so pleased, not a single thing was too big or too small. The fit on each was great and the materials were so soft and cozy; right up my alley! The only piece I didn’t like was the purse. I do switch up my bags for different occasions and outfits, so I was excited to see a new one in the box, but this particular one just wasn’t my style. It had two different materials as well as two different color leathers so for me it was just too much going on — I prefer a more classic bag.
After I tried it all on, I had to decide what I wanted to keep versus send back. They only give you three days to decide and three days to mail it back so I had to be quick with my decisions. I knew if I didn’t do it that day I would forget and it would be too late and I definitely didn’t want to be stuck keeping it all! So it was decision time.
Two of the pieces in the box (besides the purse) I knew right away were going back. I already owned something very similar to each one so I didn’t need to add those to my wardrobe. Kudos to my stylist for knowing what to send me though! Maybe if I had included my social handles she would have known to pick out something else. So the Liverpool chambray shirt and the Michael Stars knit top were going back. The Michael Stars piece was also slightly over my preferred price range ($50-100) so unless I was unwilling to take it off because I loved it so much, there was no way I was keeping it.
Next was the Madewell raw hem skinny jeans. These were super tempting to keep…but I also sent those back. I am in the market for a new pair of jeans, however, there were two things wrong: 1 — I rarely ever by anything from Madewell that is full price (pro tip: everything goes on sale there. everything.) and 2 — I’ve owned three pairs of Madewell jeans before and each one has gotten a hole on the inner right thigh. Not everyone is blessed with that coveted inner thigh gap, so my pants rub together when I walk. Therefore, these had to be returned.
Last was the Coffeeshop hooded vest. This was a tough one — I think you guys loved it as much as I did. It was like wearing a hooded blanket! But, I have to tell you, I also sent that one back. Hear me out — first I didn’t love the color of it, but also…I found it on the Nordstrom Rack website in a better color for half the price! Unfortunately they were sold out of my size, so I didn’t even end up ordering it from there, but it just made me want to send this one back even more. I’m definitely not paying $68 for a vest I could have found on my own for cheaper.
So I went on to the Stitch Fix website and started my return. They ask you a few review type questions about each piece so that the stylist can know what you did and did not like about each. This helps them make better choices for your next box so make sure you are honest with your reasoning.
A little recap. I really enjoyed the experience of having a personalized box of clothes sent directly to my door. It was like having my very own personal shopper! The styles she picked out were cute, comfortable and mostly within my price range. I think if I didn’t love to shop (or didn’t know how) this would definitely be something I continued. Honestly, it really just made me want to join their team — I love shopping and styling too much to have someone else do it for me. Or maybe I start a styling service of my own. I could totally send monthly boxes of goodies out to you with pieces we love! Would anyone even be into that?!
For now, I’m going to give it a couple more tries — I want to see what my stylist comes up with next and if my feedback gets listened to. I’ll keep you posted when my February shipment arrives!
Thanks for reading my longest post yet and let me know if you have any questions!
