kid friendly snack board

Let’s be honest. I don’t know the first thing about what kids eat. But since I’ve been told I have the eating habits of a 4 year old, I figured I had enough information to make a snack board all the kids would enjoy. I basically bought all the snacks that I love (staying on the healthy side) and a few that I know are crowd pleasers.

First things first — prep work. I start by cutting up the cucumber, cheese, and/or anything else you have that needs to be cut. Then I prepped all the meats. I did prosciutto wrapped around some of the string cheese; folded some salami in quarters to make a salami pile of sorts; and lastly I took toothpicks and skewered the turkey with either capocolla or salami.

Once you’re prepped you can start platting. I start by putting the bowls on the board because they are something to work around and then I placed by color. I almost made this a rainbow board, but thought I’d save that for the second one. Instead I started by placing the same color items on opposite sides of the board. For example, green grapes on one side and cucumber slices on the other. Carrots on one and oranges on the other. And so on. You’ll see this doesn’t stay true for the entire board but it’s a helpful starting place. When you get done with color placement, you can also focus on shape and texture placement. Example — jicama sticks wouldn’t be placed next to carrots because they are the same shape.

Then, once you have an idea of where everything is going, you can start filling in the blanks. I usually save the small items like blueberries for last because they are easy to fill in anywhere. Take a step back and look where you are missing a certain color or shape — did you end up with too much orange together? Throw in some olives or cucumber slices. At the very end, I’ll fill in what is already on the board just to make sure it looks plentiful. It makes it very inviting when it’s overflowing with goodies just waiting to be eaten.

Now it’s your turn! I would love to see your boards so if you post them, remember to use #cerriouslyimadeit so I can follow along.

PS: If you are transporting this — crisscross two long pieces of tin foil on the table, place the board in the center and wrap up and over. This keeps the items on the edge of the board secure so they don’t try to wonder off during the car ride.

tools

  • Cheese Board — I used this one from Target and I love it so much. It’s the perfect size to make larger boards and the sides make it very easy to transport. Plus it’s a lazy susan so easy for sharing!

  • Small Bowls — This set from Williams Sonoma comes with 4 bowls and I use them for everything. I love that they are simple so they don’t take away from the ingredients on the board.
