main bedroom makeover

Jamie and I have never had a completed bedroom. It’s crazy to even admit that, but it’s true! We’ve pieced together various furniture from over the years to make it work, but it always felt like we never left college. I know you know what I’m talking about. We discussed (several times) getting a real bedroom set, but quickly talked ourselves out of it to wait until we bought a house. I mean, who wants to buy furniture to fit into a place that you won't stay forever?! I wasn’t about to spend a a ton of money on furniture we wouldn’t be able to use again. No freaking way.
Well, fast forward a year or so and we needed a new mattress. We had bought a very cheap one years ago just to get by and then never upgraded. It was always a “oh we’ll get to it one day” kind of thing. Do you know how bad it is for your back to sleep on a mattress that needed to be upgraded 3 years ago?! We spend thousands of hours of our life in bed. It’s bad. And that was our final straw.
So first things first — if we’re upgrading our mattress, we’re going bigger. That was the one non-negotiable for both of us. We wanted a king bed. Mattress shopping sounded like the worst thing in the world (and that’s coming from someone who loves shopping). So I did some research online and found Lull Bed — it’s a mattress that gets delivered to your house rolled up in a box. Like what?! So easy and so convenient! I also read amazing reviews on how comfortable their mattresses are and let me tell you they didn’t lie! Upgrading our mattress with Lull was probably the best decision we’ve made in a long time.
Next we needed a bed frame and all kinds of decor. We did have side tables already that I liked, so I just looked for a bed that would match those. I found this black metal bed frame on Wayfair and love it. It’s super affordable (again, wasn’t completely convinced on spending a ton of money on furniture we might not take with us) but it’s great quality. Our room is very small, so other than a bed and table we couldn’t fit any other furniture 😂 so that was easy. We do have a corner of the room that I put a mirror, plant and a hat wall. That was really the only free space in the room.
Because we weren’t going to be able to fit a dresser, I got a bunch of bins from Amazon and The Container Store to use for extra storage under the bed and in the closet. We originally had two dressers in the room so all that stuff had to go somewhere! Then, the TV we just mounted to the wall with this TV Mount and hid the cords with this cord concealer cover.
The other upgrade we did that I’m loving is a ceiling fan and wall lights. We both love to sleep with the window open (we need it very cold) so the fan added some extra cooling to the room — will feel amazing in the Summer too! And the lights went above the side tables. These were just a nightmare to find! Most wall lights are hardwired (which, duh) and that doesn’t work well when you’re renting. I had a very specific style in mind as I was shopping, which also makes it harder. And also, do you know how expensive wall lights are?! What in the actual f. So thankfully I finally found these glass globe wall sconces from World Market and they are absolutely perfect.
Since the room is small, I didn’t want to add anything darkening, so the window curtains are just a thin linen material that is mostly see-through. Adds a little texture to the room without making it feel smaller. The gold curtain rod was actually one of the first things I bought for the room; I knew I wanted gold accents.
Now let’s chat bedding. I had heard amazing things about the Casaluna brand at Target so I went on the hunt. It’s a very popular brand (so many things were sold out!) but I was able to finally get everything through a combination of shopping both Target locations in the area plus online. It was quite the feat. So glad we were able to find it all though. They have amazing materials and the price point isn’t atrocious. I’m slightly obsessed with our bedding now. I won’t lie.
Jamie has recently started his own drone business — Sonoma County Drone Company (shameless plug). He took some gorgeous photos of the coast a few weeks ago and I knew I wanted to print them for the house. Well turns out they are the perfect color palette to match the Sage Green from Casaluna. It all came together so nicely!
